James M. Gockley
General Counsel
Since joining Mellon Financial Corporation in 1983, Mr. Gockley held a number of positions in the Corporation's Legal Department, including those of Senior Attorney, Managing Counsel-Finance, Associate General Counsel and Corporate Secretary.
Prior to 1996, the primary focus of Mr. Gockley's practice was in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, securities, finance and general corporate law. During the period of 1996 - 2002, Mr. Gockley served as Associate General Counsel for Mellon responsible for the delivery of legal services throughout the Corporation's Institutional Asset Management, Private Wealth Management and Global Securities Servicing business sectors. During that time he also served as the General Counsel for The Boston Company and for the Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Company.
In 2002, Mr. Gockley was named the Corporation's Chief Auditor and became a member of the Senior Management Committee. In that role, Mr. Gockley also supervised the activities of the Corporation's Ethics Office, Corporate Investigations and Regulatory Support units. In 2006 Mr. Gockley returned to the Legal Department as the Corporation's Deputy General Counsel. With the 2007 merger of Mellon Financial and The Bank of New York, Mr. Gockley was named Deputy General Counsel for the combined organization with his primary area of service to the Corporation's Asset Management, Private Wealth Management and Private Banking business sectors.
Mr. Gockley received his undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Arts, Magna Cum Laude, from Washington and Jefferson College in 1977 and his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1980, where he was a member of the Law Review. Prior to joining Mellon, Mr. Gockley was in private practice with the Pittsburgh-based law firm of Eckert, Seamans, Cherin & Mellott.
